Tumblr user MeghanWasLike recently posted a hand drawn chart representing her bad luck in the online dating world, specifically on the online dating site OKCupid. The somewhat depressing circular chart goes from bad to worse.

From her blog:

Thanks to that reblog from @ilovecharts, I was feeling good and made a little illustration about my internet dating cycle. Notice that at no point does it say “Relationship!” or “successfully land a boyfriend.” Obviously I haven’t figured out how to do that.

What do you think of Meghan’s depiction of the life of an online dater? Have you experienced something similar? Can you give Meghan any tips on how to change her outlook?

This billboard, which was spotted in Boston, according to AdRants, advertises the dating site EstablishedMen.com, although we’re not sure how. We’re assuming that there was a process in creating a massive ad that would be shown all over the city and likely cost thousands of dollars to erect, but it definitely doesn’t appear so.

UNLESS, of course, the whole point was to be confusing and embarrassingly cheap-looking. I mean, look – we’re a blog that discusses dating sites and we’re talking about it, so I guess it did its job, huh? Although, then again, I’m definitely not actually gonna go to the site or suggest it to anyone, but like they say, all press is good press!

What do you think? Was this ad meant to look the way it does? Or is it just a poorly-thought out and terribly constructed mess?

We’re all aware that Sugar Daddy relationships exist, we’re not stupid. We also know that while sometimes these relationships are strictly platonic and just for show, others turn into meaningful, long term love affairs where both parties are satisfied and don’t feel used in any sense of the word. We also know that some of those relationships end in a big f***ing disaster because the Sugar Daddy (or Momma, I guess) is basically paying for sex from a person who LITERALLY only in it for the Louis Vuitton.

However, one possibility that I hadn’t entertained in the Sugar Daddy relationship is the one where the Sugar Daddy meets his counterpart, flies with her to a exotic, beautiful, and isolated island, and then HACKS OFF ALL OF HER LIMBS AND HAS SEX WITH EACH OF THEM BEFORE PAYING A POVERTY-STRICKEN LOCAL IN BEEF JERKY TO DISPOSE OF THE BODY IN THE ENDLESS OCEAN.

Seriously, I can’t believe that this website is real, because while it may seem desirable to a young, beautiful, <strike> superficial and lazy-as-shit human being whose never heard of the concept of hard work and saving money</strike> single woman, it’s about as dangerous as putting a photo of yourself on Craigslist with your address, location of hidden key, and hour you plan to fall asleep.

UUUGHHHHH. DUUUUUUUUUUUMB.

It’s fairly common knowledge dating sites can be short on women. So much so that they’re often dubbed “sausage fests,” leading the few women that are on the site to be bombarded by messages from men. A recent HuffingtonPost article by Molly Shapiro details the reasons that many women choose not to online date – and the reasons single women should get past those reasons and sign up online today!

1. “Because People Will Think I’m a Loser”

Although women believe online dating “smacks of desperation,” Shapiro notes, going out and looking for men at a bar is just as forward. The only difference? At a bar, “the choices you do have will be severely limited by the simple determinants of time, space and location.”

2. “Everyone Online Lies”

Although Shapiro cites a study that says about 90% of online daters tell a lie, those lies are fairly minor. “A bit of deception about age is common, but only a 1.5 percent deviation. Women tend to shave about 5 percent off their weight, and men tend to add about 1 percent to their height. Most people limit their online lying in anticipation of one day meeting their match, and the fear of getting caught.”

3. “Men Who Date Online Are Scary”

There are, of course, bad people who online date. But probably no more than there are bad people at your favorite bars of coffee shops. Shapiro notes that 1/3rd of internet users have tried online dating, and that most of them are “shy or not adept at picking up women. Some of them are too busy with jobs or hobbies to go trolling for dates in bars. Some don’t like the kind of women they meet there. Some are divorced and have kids to take to soccer practice or help with their homework.” In other words, great guys that you wouldn’t otherwise meet without trying online dating.

4. “But I Won’t Have A Good ‘How We Met’ Story”

Here, Shapiro comes full circle to the “shame factor,” that people don’t want to admit that they met their significant other online. However, as online dating becomes more popular, it seems as though everyone knows at least someone that met their other half online. As Miss Shapiro puts it, “Most people know at least one online dating success story — their second cousin, their boss’ daughter or their best friend’s sister who found love on the Internet. So why not make the next happy ending your own?”

We agree wholeheartedly!

What do you think? Are you open to trying online dating? Why do you think women sometimes steer clear of the online dating world?

TV and radio personality Rush Limbaugh has outdone himself again in the “foot in mouth” department by recently calling a college student, Sandra Fluke, a “slut” and “prostitute” for testifying before congress that her employer’s health insurance plan should cover birth control. Advertisers by the dozens have pulled their funding for his radio show, and more are following suit every day.

However, dating site owner Brandon Wade has decided to go in the opposite direction of traffic – offering to buy 30 and 60-second ads on Limbaugh’s show.

Via Slate:

“Rush Limbaugh, who married a blonde bombshell half his age, is a model Sugar Daddy,” the company announced. “The moniker of a Sugar Daddy is that of an older, successful, wealthy man romantically involved with a younger, beautiful woman, much like the relationship Rush shares with his much younger wife, Lauryn Rogers.”

“Rush Limbaugh is one of the greatest examples of the modern day Sugar Daddy,” Wade said in a press release. “We wouldn’t feel right if we didn’t come forward and support him in his time of need.”

In a time when there are more dating sites than daters, it’s not a surprise that the guys in charge are doing whatever they can to get some publicity. However, we’re pretty appalled that Wade would stoop as low as to show support for a man who is so obviously the scum of the world wide pond.

Although I suppose we shouldn’t expect much from a guy who claims he “helps out girlfriends financially as well as with mentoring.” Keep it classy, Wade. Keep it classy.

Next week, DatePro will share our own research on how to spot overseas scammers online, so you can safeguard yourself against getting your heart (and possibly pocket book) broken a scammer while on your online dating adventure. However, today we came across some research that helps you decipher whether a person is just plain lying online!

According to ABS-CBN news, there are some ways to tell whether someone you are chatting with online is lying about themselves. The study, by Catalina Toma of University of Wisconsin – Madison, analyzed the use of linguistics of 78 online dating profiles, and seemed to show that online daters making false statements “distance themselves from their deceptive statements.”

Here are the results of their study:

The more deceptive the profile, the less likely an online dater uses the first-person pronoun “I.”
A liar employs “negation” — he or she uses “not sad” instead of “happy,” and “not boring” instead of “exciting.”
A person who lies in his or her online dating profile tend to write shorter descriptions. The less he or she writes, the fewer untrue things he or she may have to remember and support later.
If he or she lied about her age, height or weight, the person is more likely to avoid discussing about appearance and instead turn to work or life achievements.

These tips are a great starting point when you being courting someone online. They can help you judge whether a person you are talking to is looking for an honest relationship, or instead is someone who will lie, cheat, or steal their way throughout your time together.

What do you think? Do you have any tips for the new online dater to help them avoid being lied to online?

Happy Valentine’s Day from DatePro, and here’s some good news: According to an article by online dating expert Julie Spira, online dating has finally lost its stigma. While in the past, meeting someone online seemed to imply that you were a failure at dating in the “real world,” nowadays dating sites are the second most common place to meet your significant other, just behind meeting through a mutual friend.

According to a study by the Association for Psychological Science, however, the scientific matching approach that many dating sites use (think eHarmony) to set up couples may be inferior to just meeting by chance. Via the study:

Although many dating sites tout the superiority of partner matching through the use of “scientific algorithms,” the authors find that there is little evidence that these algorithms can predict whether people are good matches or will have chemistry with one another.

Findings such as this make us wonder if perhaps the “algorithms” these dating sites tout are just a way to bring in customers. We all know that people gravitate towards products that make promises, and claiming that a site uses SCIENCE to match couples is about as convincing a promise as you get. Just as much holistic medicine is dependent on the “placebo effect,” isn’t it possible that these scientific algorithms just put people in the right mindset to find love?

What do you think? Do you believe that dating sites using algorithms and formulas are better at creating love connections?

You might remember a post a few months back wherein we took notice of casual dating site OnlineBootyCall’s weekly posts sharing their ex-members’ reasons for leaving (dubbed testiMOANials, teehee). The recurring posts seemed to show that people were finding more than just hookups on the site, and some actually found marriage, which is surprising given the dating site’s decidedly anti-marriage stance.

It appears that the testimonials have kept on coming, because the site shared a press release this morning that made the claim that casual daters might have an easier time finding love than those who stick to the traditional dating sites like Match.com and eHarmony. From the founder, Moses Brown:

“We have always believed that all online encounters should be considered casual until proven otherwise. For most daters, sites like eHarmony put too much emphasis on the serious task of starting relationships online. At OBC, our members are having fun meeting new people and are dating without the pressure of commitment … it makes sense that many are finding unexpected romance.”

Furthermore, the press release included a quote from an actual ex-member of OnlineBootyCall, a Leslie Williams Jewell from Kentucky, who met her husband on the dating site 4 years ago. “We both sit back and laugh now at how we met because he nor I wanted anyone to know,” Williams Jewell says, “but now I’ll just tell anybody!”

Although we’re not 100% convinced that OBC is the FIRST place we’d look if we were looking for long-term romance, we are intrigued by the idea… perhaps Brown is right. When singles are on a desperate hunt to walk down the aisle, they’re likely to over-think things, look past potential matches, and forget what the real point of online dating is – meeting people you might not in real life, getting to know them, and seeing what happens from there. After all, movies like No Strings Attached and Friends With Benefits are bringing the casual relationship into the mainstream… perhaps singles are more open to a hook up first, fall in love later mentality. It is 2012, after all.

What do you think? Could casual dating sites be a smarter way to find The One instead of traditional, marriage-based sites? Or does sticking to the old-fashioned sites feel safer?

After the heartbreak she suffered with the cheating scandal and subsequent divorce of her much-younger husband Ashton Kutcher, celeb gossipers wondered aloud where Demi Moore would look for love next. With two failed marriages under her belt, Moore has been looking defeated and distraught in public, and the nearly 50-year -old actress is probably feeling lost and betrayed, as well as nervous to get back in the dating game.

According to EntertainmentWise, she’s gotten some advice on how to get back in the dating game from her pal Jennifer Aniston – by online dating! Sources say Aniston had used online dating to get her groove back after her very public break ups (with Brad Pitt and Vince Vaughn, we imagine), and suggested that Moore do the same. We’re sure that Moore would have a fantastic time using online dating and would have no problem getting the pick of the litter!

However, it may be unnecessary, as the mag also claims Demi might already be dating a California National Guard member named Blake Corl-Baietti. We’ll let you know if he hear any rumors of Demi joining the online dating game!
