Maintenance

When you have been in a relationship with someone for a while, things can start to feel routine and sometimes the excitement and passion that you experienced in the beginning starts to fade away. When a relationship is brand new you are experiencing things with someone new for the first time. This feeling of curiosity reels you in and keeps you wanting more. This exciting part of a new relationship is often referred to as “the honeymoon” stage. One of the greatest myths about relationships is that this “honeymoon” stage eventually disappears over time. This is not true! Just because a relationship isn’t new anymore doesn’t mean that the passion and excitement becomes lost in the time. This is where relationship maintenance comes into play. There are several different techniques that you can use to help maintain a happy, healthy, and exciting relationship.
The first technique is to never get too comfortable in your relationship. When couples get so comfortable with each other they begin to lose the mystery that existed when they first met. If your relationship becomes so predictable that there is no longer an element of surprise or excitement, it is guaranteed to go downhill quickly. No matter how close you get with someone, you must never lose that feeling of urgency and willingness to impress them and make them happy. Even if you know you have them wrapped around your finger never forget that you need to always put effort and energy into making them happy and reminding them that they are special to you. It’s easy to become lazy when you already have someone, but remind yourself that if you start slacking, you may very well lose that person to someone out there who tries harder.
Another maintenance technique to use is to mix things up. The same routine every single day can get very boring and repetitive. It’s important to try new things and keep your relationship fun and fresh. Experience a new restaurant together, plan a trip to a city neither of you have been to, or just simply surprise your significant other with tickets to their favorite sporting event or play. Be spontaneous and don’t be afraid to experience new things together. A good tip is to challenge each other to do something new every week. When you have something adventurous to look forward to, the everyday routine wont get as old and you will make amazing memories together.
A final technique to use in maintaining a great relationship is to never lose your passion! Don’t let yourself forget what it felt like the first time you kissed your boyfriend or girlfriend, or how much those little moments that can’t be described with words meant to you. There was a reason that you fell for that person and if want to keep them in your life you need to work at it…not every month, or even every week, but every day. Make a constant effort to remind your significant other that they are a blessing in your life. Leave them a note telling them how great they are, plan a special date, or just spend the day in bed enjoying each others company with no distractions.
The bottom line is to remember that if you have someone special in your life and you want to keep them there, you have to work at it. Successful relationships are not just handed to you on a silver platter, you have to work hard every day to ensure that you are making yourself and your significant other happy and fulfilled. What’s great about working to maintain a relationship is that if it really means a lot to you, putting in the work isn’t difficult because the reward is worth so much more.
