OkCupid Acquired By Match

What would you do if you were suddenly $50 million richer?

That’s a question for the founders of the hip dating site OKCupid, as they were just recently purchased by online dating juggernaut Match.com. According to TechCrunch, this is a continuation of the company’s recent acquisition movement, which includes the purchase of Singlesnet and People Media. The OKCupid one is, in our humble opinion, the smartest of the trio because of its casual younger user base and phenomenal blog, which continually brings in the readership with its brilliant statistical observations and witty commentary.

Interesting to note, though, that founder Christian Rudder’s controversial “Why You Should Never Pay for a Dating Site” blog post was immediately taken down after the site was purchased by one of the most expensive dating sites around at the moment. That’s a bit of a sell-out, we’d say. On the other hand, after users expressed fears that they would have to begin paying for their OKCupid profiles, co-founder Sam Yagan quickly expressed, “Our goal is that [the acquisition] will have no effect whatsoever.”
