Every couple goes through what some call “the honeymoon stage”: a period when a new relationship is blossoming and the couple think about and talk to each other at every available minute. This is fleeting, and when it ends, there is frequently one person who feels the other isn’t paying enough attention to them. This person, inevitably, becomes needy. And although they may feel completely justified in their neediness, the fact of the matter is this trait is really, really annoying. The best way to tone down the neediness of your mate is to nip it in the bud immediately, or it will only get worse. Use DatePro’s tips to calm down a clinger.

1) Do what you’ll say you do.

Back in the honeymoon period, you were on your game. Say you’d call? Call. Say you’d be there at this time, be there. But now it’s been a few months and you might forget to call or will show up late sometimes. This makes your mate feel expendable, even if it really did just slip your mind. This doesn’t have to drive you crazy, you just need to be honest- if you probably won’t call, no need to say “I’ll call you later.” Just a simple goodbye works fine.

2) Not out of sight, out of mind.

Going out with your friends is a necessity in keeping a healthy relationship. However, if you go out for the night, a quick text to say hi will make your partner feel like your attentions aren’t on some sexy someone else at the bar.

3) Let them know you don’t like the neediness.

Sit your boy or girlfriend down and let them know that although you love them, the clinging and being unnecessarily jealous is not a turn on, in fact it’s downright obnoxious. You can be as caring and attentive as you want, but if they don’t know you hate their habits, they’ll never stop. This is unfortunate, but true.

Realizing your dating a needy person doesn’t have to be the worst thing in the world, but if you really can’t shake them off, it might be time to steer them in the direction of Match.com, where they’ll find someone else who’s looking to be together all day, everyday.
