(Note: I’m pretty sure they could have done all the research for this study on me and a group of girlfriends while on a pub crawl on a Saturday afternoon. The amount of Facebook updates, Foursquare check-ins, and Tweets we make probably make up a huge percentage of these numbers.)

A recent study by app analytics firm Flurry is showing that users are become more comfortable with using apps these days, so much so that app usage has surpassed web browsing in smartphone users in the past year. With apps for normally web-browsed sites like Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, and Yelp becoming more user-friendly and easier to navigate on cell phones than their mobile sites, it’s no surprise that people stop wasting time opening pages, logging in, and attempting to click on miniscule links when they could instead use an app that is specifically built for their small screens.

So what does this mean for the dating industry? Well, it seems that creating dating site apps instead of having members use the mobile version is going to become more and more the norm. As people begin to lose interest in navigating websites with their smartphones, will dating sites lose traffic to competitors who have their apps up and running? Who knows…

Would you switch dating sites just because they didn’t have an app? Or are you a big enough fan of your dating site that you’d keep using its mobile version?

The site performed a member survey to see when people were most likely accessing the site, and the results showed that over 65% of the members accessed the site during work hours and 23% claim they do while “working from home.” 13% of the sites members are self-employed (the highest percent on the site) and a spokesperson believes there is a good reason for this:

“Those working from home do not have to labour under the scrutinous eyes of their boss, and are therefore more able to visit saucier websites on company time. However, self-employed men and women are also psychologically endowed with traits that make the more likely to stray.

[Plus,] those who can afford to be self-employed have to have had a great deal of success in their professional lives, and we know for a fact that people who succeed in business are more likely to cheat; they usually nurture perfectionism, which makes them more likely to be dissatisfied with their relationships, and are also risk-takers – a behaviour which can aid them to make bold financial decisions, and also one which draws them to the idea of an affair”.

Last week, a select bunch of OkCupid users received an e-mail informing them than they had been placed in the top half of members in terms of attractiveness, meaning that from now on in search results, they would show up higher to others in their “more attractive” group.

The determination as to whether or not you are “good looking” enough to fall into the more attractive category was based on other users’ reactions to your photo in the “Quick Search” and “Quiver” area, sections that only have a selected part of your profile text and a photo.

How does DatePro feel about this? Well, we’re not so sure. While of course we all know intial physical attraction is one of the (if not the) most important factors in whether or not you approach someone, it seems as though this is giving people who were not considered attractive enough less than a fighting chance.

Take Ugly Betty from above. She’s played by the  gorgeous America Ferrera, and yet if she were a member of OkCupid, she’d probably get placed in the bottom half, and not be seen in many search results. Seems a little unfair, don’t you think?

On the other hand, its similarly not as fair to those who are automatically placed in the “more attractive” group- someone who has their exact interests may never show up on their first page of results if they aren’t deemed attractive enough? How is that a legitimate dating site decision?
