Texas Bill 488 Passed

Big, big news for the dating industry: Texas Bill 488 passed yesterday in both the house and the senate, and if it is signed by the governor, could severely impact the dating industry. According to OnlinePersonalsWatch, Bill 488 will require dating sites to disclose whether or not they run users through a criminal database before allowing them a profile, as well as the parameters of the criminal background checks they use.
The big deal here is not that Texas wants its single citizens to feel safer when online dating, it’s that if signed into law, it will effectively force all dating sites to run criminal background checks, an expensive and time consuming process, because no site will want to clearly state, “NO, WE DON’T RUN CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS. ALL MURDERERS AND RAPISTS SIGN UP HERE.”
This could effectively wipe out free and low-cost dating sites, and further the oligopoly that the big players have over the dating industry.
We’ll keep you updated when we know more about this industry-changing law!
