Twitter Matchmaking

Just when I thought that the online dating industry had begun to run out of ideas, relationship coach Paul C. Brunson comes along and reminds me that there is no limit to online dating potential. The Washingtonian, who was a former accountant whose matchmaking service initially specialized in matching African American clients, has taking his business to, you guessed it, Twitter.

#MDMW, or “modern Day Matchmaking Wednesday,” is a weekly Washington service in which Mr. Brunson picks a mystery date and describes them on his Twitter feed using 140 characters or less. He then shares a photo of the mystery date, and chooses one of his Twitter followers (of which he has over 17,000) to go on a date with them.

Although I was under the impression that “matchmaking” died when internet dating began, Paul seems to believe otherwise:

“There is no other medium like the Internet . . . that allows for such wide access to people,” Brunson says. “The matchmakers that can leverage this will be at a much more competitive advantage to those that only possess a few hundred people in their card files.”

Although I wouldn’t ever consider Twitter to be a medium that would facilitate dates, Brunson’s clients seems to love it as well:

“Being matched was a great opportunity to practice breaking out of my shell and to learn even more about myself,” she says. “I think everyone [who participates in #MDMW] trusts one another, so people aren’t afraid to let their guards down and say what they’re really thinking. No one truly feels like a stranger, so the uncertainty that may exist when using traditional online matchmaking services is dissipated.”

Well alright – we’ll see how this Twitter Matchmaking service goes… although we do wonder if Brunson has read our article about how Twitter users aren’t great at relationships… ;)

What do you think – would you try out Paul’s Twitter Matchmaking service? Or do you think 140 characters isn’t the place to be looking for love?
